There was a time when truck drivers had to depend on coin-operated axle scales to weigh their loads. Since these scales couldn’t weigh the truck and trailer all at once, most of the time the weight was totally inaccurate. No one could guarantee the accuracy of the vehicle weight, so drivers were left open to some pretty hefty fines. There was no one to back them up if they got an overweight citation.
